The cat distribution system always gets it right. 

If a cat suddenly appears on your doorstep and decides that it's time to adopt you, that it happenig to you for a reason. We call that the cat distribution system at work. Somehow, cats know which humans to reach out to for help. They have some internal radar that tells them: "This one. This one is safe." And it works. We, as cat people, know that. And we think that the person in this story, who adopted an unspayed cat that they thought was a stray, knew that as well.

Still, it didn't stop them from trying to do the right thing and attempt to reunite the cat with her owner, if she has one. Things happen, sometimes cats escape, sometimes they look for summer homes. Their owners could be waiting. And sometimes, like this time, the cat escaped for a reason as well. it is clear, once reading the story, that the cat was unhappy in its old home, that she did not feel safe, that she was scared. Once her owner finally did show up to take her, she reacted with horror, wanting to get away from them. She knew that her home was not with them but with the woman who rescued her.

    The universal cat distribution chose me back in early November and put me in possession of a little black void I named Simone. I took her to the vet right away to see if she was chipped, but no chip.

    After Christmas I was sitting at the airport waiting on my flight and get a text from my neighbor saying she found the owner of the cat. Turns out the lady lived one street over. When I got home, I called the owner who immediately asked if she could come over and verify it was her cat.

    I grabbed "Toothless" from another room and put her in her owners arms where the cat immediately reared up and freaked out. The owner clasped her to her chest while "Toothless" tried to squirm away, crying and clawing.

    In my house, you could pick her up, scritch her under the chin, brush her, etc. if a stranger came in she might cower but she didn't bite unless you missed ALL of her cues that she wasn't having it (hissing, crouching, etc).

    I said "do you want to go home and get your cat carrier?" And she said no, she would just put the cat in her car. I then offered my cat carrier, telling her that it wasn't a good idea to drive with a loose cat in her car, even if it was one street over.

    So she put the cat in my carrier, thanked me, and then bounded to her car swinging the cat carrier around like it was a duffle bag. I winced, but was resolved that it wasn't my cat so I just let it go. I was very happy I found the owner, don't get me wrong.

  • The cat's reaction to her owner tells you everything that you need to know about their relationship. Cats don't react like this for no reason. The fact that this cat behaves so differently with you than with the owner is another problem. Cats are not “mean” for no reason either. There is always a reason, and in this case, it is very much clear that she would rather be with you than with the person who stresses her out to the point that she lashes out.

    Likewise, it's a red flag that the cat is over a year old now and she never bothered to spay or chip her in that time, especially if the cat is prone to getting out. It is also a red flag that she described the cat as one who bites and claws enough that guests in the house had to be warned not to touch her.

    I don't have faith that the owner was treating the cat kindly, and if there is anything I hate, it is bad pet owners who treat their pets poorly. I am not telling anyone in the neighborhood that I have the cat either.

  • Honestly, we think that you did the right thing. There's a part of us that thought, at the very beginning, that you should have given the owner yet another chance. But you're right - enough is enough. The cat could not have been clearer about the choice that she made when she came back to you after those 12 hours. Giving her back to the owner once again might have meant that she would not have been able to come back to you a third time, and that was not something worth risking. Keep her a secret if you must. You are doing the right thing for her.

    Rose Raster Sounds like Toothless found her way home and decided to give the neighbor a proper eviction notice. Honestly, if I were her, I'd want to hang out with the person who believes in cat carriers over "loose in the car" as a valid transportation option. You may have unofficially adopted the world's most rebellious feline.
